Linda Rae Broten was born on January 4, 1945 in Valley City, ND, to Olaf I. and Helen (Knauss) Broten. She grew up on the family farm near Dazey, ND, attending the Dazey Public School and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She married her high school sweetheart, Vernon Schuler, on November 7, 1962. Together, they raised their three children in Valley City and Wahpeton. Active in her church, Christian Women and the Eagles Club, Linda worked in retail in Valley City and Wahpeton. When she began working at the Dakota Veterinary Clinic as a secretary/bookkeeper, she found a job and co-workers she especially enjoyed. From taking inventory of medicines, to assisting in the surgery, to comforting those who had lost a dear pet, this work suited Linda’s compassionate and energetic personality.
An expert homemaker, cook and baker, Linda loved to entertain, whether it was a lavish, table-groaning Thanksgiving meal or coffee and treats and a game of cards for drop-in friends. She was a creator. She sewed and crafted, often for others. Linda and Vernon traveled, starting with their children and a pop-up camper and ending with a 5th wheel trailer, to 49 states; only Alaska remained to be explored. Summer weekends at the lake were full of boating, water skiing and swimming. Linda and Vernon planned, in retirement, to travel from place to place with their 5th wheeler. Their first winter was in Lake Havasu City, AZ, and they fell in love with the area and the people who became their second family, and they never left except for their summers in North Dakota. Linda’s grandchildren were her delight. She lovingly followed their growth and milestones with enthusiasm.
Linda is survived by her husband, Vernon, Sanborn, ND; children, David Schuler, Cooperstown, ND, Lorie (Anthony) Reed, Brooklyn Park, MN, and Steven (Linda) Schuler, Glendale, AZ; four grandchildren, Alexis and Jordan Schuler, Glendale, AZ, and Hailey and Hannah Reed, Brooklyn Park, MN; two sisters, Louise (James Jenness) Broten, Bismarck, ND, and Judith (Scott) Legge, Sanborn, ND; one brother, James (Patricia) Broten, Dazey, ND; numerous nieces and nephews.
