CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Valley City Babe Ruth baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a split against a Fargo little league team, taking the first game 10-9, then dropping the nightcap 9-3.
Valley City trailed 8-3 at the midway point of the first game, but battled back and scored the winning run in walkoff fashion in the seventh. Jacob Miller, Casey Engelhard, Collin Schroeder, and Jordan Magnuson all picked up two hits each with both of Magnuson’s hits triples.
Magnuson got the start, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in a no-decision. Jesse Johnson earned the win, working the final two innings in relief, allowing just a hit and a walk, while striking out four.
“This was one of those games that you like to be a part of if you come out on the right side with a win,” said head coach Lance Lukes. “It was an offensive game for both teams and a real guy check for our guys to stick with it and chip away to come back.”
A pair of costly errors allowed Fargo to score nine runs while only scoring in two innings in the nightcap. Dalton Ondracek did not give up an earned run in the start for Valley City, but allowed five unearned on five hits, striking out two in a tough loss. Miller allowed four unearned runs in relief, making every Fargo run unearned.
Valley City’s record stands at 15-15 after the regular season, 8-6 in league play. They will play in the District 6 tournament in Steele next week.
