Garland, 87, of Oakes, ND, passed away July 18, 2012, at the Oakes Community Hospital.

Blanche was born May 16, 1925 on a farm three miles north of Glover, North Dakota, to Edmund and Mildred (Wilke) Benedix.  As a young girl, Blanche attended rural schools in the area before attending Oakes High School, and graduated with the class of 1942.  She then attended the State Normal Industrial College in Ellendale, North Dakota, where she received first grade elementary certificate. There she met the love of her life, Benny. Blanche taught five years in neighborhood schools while Benny served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  They were married on June 26, 1946 at Blanche’s parents’ farm home.  In 1948, they moved to Oakes, where Benny learned the bricklaying and roofing trade.  Together, they owned and operated Oakes Roofing and Masonry.  Blanche and Benny were blessed with one daughter, Judy.  Over the years, Blanche worked part-time for many different businesses, and she especially loved working with the public.  Benny passed away January 17, 1990.

Blanche enjoyed doing volunteer work for many nonprofit organizations.  She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and enjoyed attending Sunday morning bible study.  Blanche was also a member of the LWML, the Legion Auxiliary for 59 years, the Red Hat Society, Band Mothers, and Solo Club.  Blanche enjoyed making crafts and had a great reputation for her lovely greeting cards.  She loved gardening, playing cards and dancing.  She and Benny even belonged to the Mr. & Mrs. Dancers Club.  Her home was always a gathering place for family and friends, and anyone who visited would certainly be fed.

Blanche is survived by daughter, Judy (Harold) Kubischta of Belfield, ND; granddaughter, Lindsey (Cody) VanderBusch of Bismarck, ND; a sister, Phyllis Zimbleman of Oakes; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Benny.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Oakes, ND, with burial to follow at the Oakes View Cemetery.  Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes.
