CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) After the control structure of the Tolna Coulee was dedicated in Nelson County on Thursday officials with the U-S Army Corps of Engineers visited with officials downstream in Valley City.
U-S-A-C-E Major General John Peabody said even with the control structure in place one never knows when or how mother nature will strike or react in the future.

Peabody was referring to the lake approaching a record level elevation of 1454 feet last year before backing off to slightly below 1453 feet as of July 19.
Peabody says the control structure is one more tool of protection for downstream residents nervous about the lake rising to or beyond the breakout level of 1458 feet.
Barnes County Commissioner John Froelich asked if stop logs at the control structure would be removed or put back in place depending on how Devils Lake fluctuates in the future. Peabody says its a good question that will have to be answered later.

City commissioner Matt Pederson says the city would like more clarification concerning the construction rules on levees built for permanent flood protection as the city mores forward in the first phase buyouts and flood protection.
City commissioner Madeline Luke says it’s nice to have the U-S-A-C-E here taking input from downstream cities along the Sheyenne River.
