CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Hi-Liner cross country team picked up a meet championship Thursday.
Valley City’s girls cross country team won the Casselton Invite with a strong showing, placing five runners in the top 18 places.
April Berntson finished second with a time of 15:47 to lead Valley City’s effort. Barbara Zubrod was 8th, Cherrie Varner took 13th, Jamie Ronning came in 17th and Jessica Ronning was 18th.
On the boys side, the Hi-Liners came away with seventh place out of 10 teams. Casey Engelhard led the team with a sixth place finish. Nathan Johnson was 29th and Justin Pritchett was 30th.
Valley City’s JV teams won first place in both the boys and girls divisions.
Head coach Brian Engelhard said overall it was a good meet as a team.
“April Berntson and Casey Engelhard both ran very strong varsity races,” he said. “Both runners were able to pick up several spots in the last mile of their races, and paced themselves very well. Mikey Meester and Eden Crump, both 8th graders, ran their best races so far in their JV races.”
The Hi-Liners are in action again Oct. 6 at a meet in Rugby.
