(NewsDakota.com)- Another year of Jimmie basketball kicks-off tonight at the Jamestown Civic Center as the Jimmies welcome the University of Brandon. They will play two games against Brandon, one tonight at 7pm and then Saturday at 5pm.
Head Coach Justin Wieck takes over a program that was 25-7 in 2011-12, but lost five starters. Wieck was named the new head coach this summer after Matt Murken left for Minot State.
Names like Byron Jones, BJ Mertens, and Travis Burley will not be seen on the programs printed tonight, for Mertens and Jones the first time in five years.
The Jimmies bring back three players that had large impacts off the bench last season. Davon Thomas, Mark Hoge, and Jared Sutherland will be counted on to play a larger role this season.
Taylor Newton and Beny Collins were a little farther down on the depth chart last season and Coach Wieck expects them to play a larger role this years.
After this weekends games the Jimmies will be off (other than next weekend’s alumni game) until November 2nd when they travel to Dordt (IA) to take on a Defenders team that also made a National Tournament appearance last season.
On that same trip a stop in Orange City, IA to take on Northwestern College, another 2012 National Tournament team the next day. Both of those games will be aired on KQDJ 1400.
Tip-off tonight is set for 7pm and 5pm on Saturday.
