(NewsDakota.com) The Carrington Cardinal football team was in a must win situation last night (Oct. 16th) against Rugby. In order for the Cardinals to advance to the Class AA Division playoffs, they had to beat Rugby by seven or more points. The Cards did just that coming out with a victory over Rugby 23-14 in Class AA West Region action. Carrington improves to 5-3-1 overall, 4-3 in the AA West. Rugby is 5-4 overall, 4-3 in the AA West.
The Cards scored in the first quarter, it was a 40-yard touchdown pass from Senior QB Cole Hendrickson to Alex Nelson, the extra point was no good making it 6-0 at the half.
Both teams came out strong in the third quarter, each team scoring twice. Carrington’s Sophomore running back Seth Abaurrea returned a kickoff for 80-yards, and Senior running back Casey Murphy had a 29-yard touchdown run for the Cardinals. The score at the end of three quarters, was Carrington 20 Beulah 14.
Then in the fourth quarter, Carrington got what they needed. McKenzie Miller hit a field goal from 23-yards out putting the Cards up by 9, making it 23-14 the final score.
The Cardinals will travel to Grafton for the first round of the Class AA playoffs on Saturday, October 27th at 2pm against the Grafton Spoilers. The Spoilers are 8-1 overall this season, their only loss coming to Fargo Shanley in early September. That game can be heard on AM 1600 KDAK starting around 1:30p.
Carrington is 4-0 on the road this year.
