CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) A pitch was made to support the Valley City sales tax renewal advisory vote during a meeting on Monday.
Valley City Barnes County Economic Development Director Jennifer Feist said the extension of the existing sales tax will help secure construction for a new $31.6 million National Guard facility on a 20 acre site and to launch the Interstate 94 Regional Development Corridor on a 45 acre site east of John Deer Seeding. Feist said it’s the largest project proposed in the history of the Valley Development Corporation.
Feist said 70 percent of the existing 1 percent Valley City sales tax goes toward economic development, 25 percent for property tax relief and 5 percent for service and retail image enhancement. Feist said to complete the proposed development project an extension of the current 1 percent sales tax needs to be extended through the end of 2029. The existing sales tax used for development and property tax relief expires at the end of 2019.
Under the plan a 77 acres tract of land owned by the Stan Ryan family would be purchased and annexed into the city of Valley City. A portion of the land would be used for future development, another portion would be used to extend the property of John Deere Seeding and the other portion for the new North Dakota National Guard facility that will have 3 buildings totaling 110,000 square feet and employee about 30 to 35 full-time National Guard soldiers.
