N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Cruising to a two-set lead in the District 5 Girls Volleyball Tournament championship game Monday night, it looked like the Ellendale Cardinals were going to make quick work of the opposing LaMoure Loboes. However, head coach Colette Middlestead and her Cardinals squad would ultimately need five sets to eek out the victory and claim the tournament title (25-20, 25-19, 25-27, 9-25, 15-8).
For the Cardinals, senior Lucinda Stoppleworth had 26 kills and junior Shayna Mertz contributed 9 kills of her own.
In the defeat, the Loboes were led by 17 kills from junior Courtney Carlson and 14 digs from senior Andrea Watkins.
Ellendale will now be the No. 1 seed in the Region 3 Tournament starting Monday at LaMoure High School.
In other Day 3 action, Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal and Edgeley-Kulm both earned berths to the Region 3 Tournament with victories. PBK downed Litchville-Marion-Montpelier 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-21) and E-K defeated Barnes County North 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-18).
The Loboes’ Megan Good earned Senior Athlete of the Year honors, and their head coach Laurie Good took home the award for Coach of the Year.
