(NewsDakota.com) The Cardinals played a double header in boys and girls basketball last night against District two Central Cass. In the first game, the #5 Carrington boys defeated Central Cass 71-67. In the second game, Central Cass girls defeated Carrington 59-32. The Card boys improve to 12-0, the Squirrels drop to 8-2. The Card girls drop to 6-3, the Squirrels improve to 5-1.
BOYS: CARRINGTON 71 CENTRAL CASS 67
The Carrington Cardinals keep their perfect season going with a win last night over the Squirrels of Central Cass and improve to 12-0 overall. In the latest North Dakota Class B Boys basketball poll, the Cards are number five, Central Cass received some votes, so you knew it was going to be a battle.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, sparked by Senior Center Scott Burnham and Senior Forward Austin Johnson with six apiece. At the end of the half, the Cards led 35-30, Johnson and Burnham were in double figures and leading all scorers with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Then in the second half, Carrington’s Senior Guard Taylor Skytland got the hot hand and drilled three 3-pointers (four total for the game) and kept them in the lead in the third and fourth quarters, despite the Squirrels getting some quick buckets after some good offensive rebounding.
The Cards had four players in double figures, Taylor Skytland led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Johnson with 16, Burnham had 15 and Sophomore Guard Seth Abaurrea had 13.
The Squirrels had four players in double figures as well, led by Senior Guard Ellery Bresnahan with 14, Junior Center Connor Rieniets fouled out in the fourth with 13, Sophomore Forward Tommy Voss had 11 and Senior Forward Garrett Ebach had 10.
Carrington had 16 turnovers, Central Cass had 18. The Cards shot 61% from the charity stripe, 11/18, Central Cass was 5/7 for 71%.
In the JV Boys game, Carrington lost to Central Cass.
GIRLS: CENTRAL CASS 59 CARRINGTON 32
It was a tough night for the Cardinal girls basketball team, 6’3″ Junior Center Faith Dooley of Central Cass dominated in the paint and scored a game high 19 points and had four blocked shots. Junior Forward Kayla Hochhalter led the way for Carrington with 12. The match up with Hochhalter and Dooley was a good one, but Dooley had a really good night and helped the Squirrels get the win.
Carrington was followed in scoring by Senior Guard Josey Page and Senior Center Breana Barton with six apiece. Senior Forward Nikki Braaten had five.
The Squirrels were followed in scoring by Senior Forward Hannah Breske with 12.
In the JV Girls game, Carrington beat Central Cass 43-41.
Next up for the Carrington girls will be on Monday, January 21st against District seven opponent Lakota/Adams-Edmore in Lakota, varsity coverage can be heard on AM 1600 KDAK around 7p. The Cards beat the Raiders earlier this month in the Lake Region Tournament Championship game back on January 5th.
