CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson defended a charge by some city residents that the police force used excessive force on several occasions in 2012. Thompson told the city commission during is annual report on Monday why he disagreed with that claim.

Thompson said the number of adult arrested more than doubled from 165 in 2011 to 414 in 2012. He said 47 percent of the adults arrested were for alcohol related offense including 29 percent who were arrested for driving under the influence.

He said part of the reason for the increase is the requirement that an arrest report be completed anytime a person is taken into custody. In the past those persons taken into custody for detox had no case, or arrest report completed detailing the circumstances for the detox. This is now completed on a per incident basis. Thompson said it’s one reason case reports jumped from 405 in 2011 to 789 in 2012.

On the bright side property crimes from burglary, breaking and entering and theft remain low. Thompson added that to have only one vehicle reported stolen in this jurisdiction in the last 4 years, is fantastic.
