CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City girls tennis team lost a pair of very close matches Thursday at the State Tennis Tournament.

In the opening round Valley City lost 3-2 to Minot, and then was eliminated with a 3-2 loss to Bismarck in the consolation semifinals. Valley City now shifts its focus to doubles play, where the Hi-Liners have two teams competing Friday.

Destiny Winkler and Claire Olson are the No. 2 seed from the EDC. Sam Coit and Sara Gilbertson are the No. 6 seed. Both play their first round matches at 1 p.m. Friday. If both teams win, they would face each other in the second round.

West Fargo and Grand Forks Red River both went 2-0 in the team tournament on Thursday, and face each other in the State Championship on Friday morning.
