(NewsDakota.com) The Superintendent of Oakes Public Schools acknowledged Wednesday that the school district could have done a better job of communicating with parents in regards to a measure taken Tuesday afternoon in order to keep students safe.
Josh Johnson says the district was notified around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon of a drive-by shooting that occurred in Sisseton South Dakota. As a precaution, and after consulting with local law enforcement, school administration officials asked teachers not to take students outside on the playground for the rest of the school day.
Some parents were not made aware of the precaution taken until learning it from their children after school. An official notice about the measure was sent out to the public Wednesday morning. Johnson says communication between the district and parents needed to be stronger in this instance, and says it will be in the future.
Johnson added any rumors suggesting the school was in lockdown Tuesday afternoon were simply false.
