N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – During the Jamestown School Board Meeting, a brief discussion was held on the post-Labor Day start to schools as part of Superintendent Robert Lech’s report.
“As a district, we are going to adopt a two-year school calendar that includes options for post- Labor Day.” Lech stated. With talks of an initiated measure for a post-Labor Day start mandate, Lech stated that he wanted the school and the community to be well-informed as to what it may mean.
“In my experiences, there is often misinformation or unrealistic expectations related to what a post-Labor Day start may mean to the calendar. The two-year calendar isn’t meant to persuade any patron to one side or the other. It is simply designed to educate the public on their options.” Lech said.
If a post-Labor Day start was initiated, it would affect the schedule of schooling. For the 2014/15 school year, school would start on September 2nd. But, in the 2015/16 school year, school would start on September 8th, pushing graduation to June 12th. By law, schools are required to have 175 instruction days.
“A graduation one week earlier on June 5th is possible, but it would eliminate nearly all breaks for students in the spring, which I don’t believe is in the best interest of the students. “
Lech also mentioned the fact of having professional development days, storm days, in-service days and other days that needed to be considered as well.
