CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) Day one of the Barnes County Tournament has shown that regardless of seeding you can’t count any team out.
The state’s top seed Milnor was tested early by Barnes County North, while Griggs County Central upset the tournaments three seed, Enderlin. In the other contest, Maple Valley started their push to a fifth straight Barns County championship by defeating newcomer Sargent Central, and LaMoure Litchville-Marion moved on to the semi-finals with a victory over Finley –Sharon/Hope-Page.
#1 Milnor 69 vs #8 Barnes County North 42
In the opening game of the tournament, Milnor found themselves in a back and forth match with Barnes County North in the first quarter. At the end of the opening half, talk would have been about BCN’s TJ Steckler who totaled 13 points had it not been for the 20 put up by Milno’r Briton Bussman. The 6’3 senior would continue to run the floor against Barnes County North finishing the night just shy of an opening round record (37 points) with a total of 33 points.
A big part of Milnor’s secondary scoring came from post players Masen Olsen and Wyatt Mund who both finished the game with 10 points apiece.
Steckler would finish the game with 19 points for Barnes County North.
#4 Maple Valley 50 vs #5 Sargent Central 38
It was a battle of the bigs between Maple Valley and Sargent Central, but the Raiders just had more of them. While Maple Valley held the led from the first quarter on, Sargent Central was never very far behind. The Cadets made life uncomfortable for the Raiders with strong post play from Devin Arp, and outside shooting Brandon Wyum. However, the Raiders would answer it with a duo of their own. 6’5 Junior, Dakota Steele and 6’7 senior, James Richman combined for 33 points and put Maple Valley on track to a fifth straight title with a 50-38 win over Sargent Central.
Arp led the Cadets in scoring with 17 points, while Wyum finished with 16.

The two versus seven match up pitted the Lobos and the Spartans against one another. Brady Thielges and Anthony Olson would tally 20 points apiece for the Lobos as they claimed a quick victory over their Barns County Rivals.
#6 Griggs County Central 62 vs #3 Enderlin 58
In the only upset in the first round, Griggs County Central topped the number three seed Enderlin. The game was tight between the two teams the entire way through, but in the end Griggs County Central took the four point victory .
Three players reached double digit scoring for the Griggs County Central, but it was Jayden Grover who led the team with 26 points on the night.
On the other side of the court, Danieal Lindgren led Enderlin in points with 18 in the game.
