(NewsDakota.com) For the second year in a row, the Ellendale girls and boys basketball teams swept their counterparts from Oakes, and with the boys victory, kept the Cowbell traveling trophy for another year.

Girls: Ellendale 68 Oakes 16

The Lady Cardinals lead from the onset, and never looked back. A 26-2 lead after the first eight minutes turned into a 42-4 lead at the halftime break. Ellendale (2-1) had three players in double figures, lead by Madilyn Bommersbach and Shayna Mertz with 13 earch, and Rachel Herman with 10. 

Oakes now has lost both games they’ve played this season by 97 points. The Lady Tornadoes (0-2) had four points each from Sydney Breitbach, Shelby Gelenske and Haley Visto.

Boys: Ellendale 62 Oakes 49

The battle for the Cowbell had ups and downs throughout for the hometown Tornadoes. Oakes was within a point at the end of the first, but saw the lead for the Cardinals grow to 13 at half, and 17 by the end of the third. 

Oakes (0-4) made it a game down the stretch, but got no closer than seven points and Ellendale (4-2) held onto the traveling trophy for another season.

Adam White lead all scorers with 23 points for Ellendale, while Oakes had 12 from Bryce Meehl, 11 of those in the second half. 

Oakes will take on Groton South Dakota Saturday afternoon before heading to Ellendale on the 27th of December to compete in the Dakota Holiday tournament to face the Cardinals.
