CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) For the first time in a month, the Vikings Men’s and Women’s basketball teams were back at the W.E. Osmon Field house on Saturday afternoon. How sweet it was as VCSU pulled off the sweep against the University of Minnesota Morris.
The women’s teams hit the court first for the second meeting of the year. The first time the teams met was December 20th, and on that day the Vikings would dominate the Cougars under the basket.
Saturday’s game was almost a retelling of the same story. Led By Stephanie Pedersen, who forced he way to the hoop for a game high 21 points, the Vikings never trailed once taking over the lead late in the first. When shots didn’t fall, the Valley Cities, Britany Lehner, was there to pull down second chance opportunities. The VCSU senior would finish the day with 10 rebounds while also scoring 14 points earning a double double.
The Cougars would make a second half push, but it would be stifled quickly by Valley City who held on for a 77-55 win. The Vikings women now stand 6-6 on the season.
After the Women’s game the men hit the court. Earlier this year the Vikings claimed a one point victory over the Cougars at the University of Minnesota Morris. This game would not be as close.
Valley City’s best decision came in giving the ball to Aaron Duske. The Buffalo, Minnesota native was nearly perfect in the game hitting 76% of his shots, including four baskets from behind the arc. When the game was finished Duske was the game’s high scorer with 27 points.
With ten Second half points from AJ McDonald, the Vikings would hold on to claim a 64-55 win over the Cougars.
The Vikings now hold a record of 4-9 on the year. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams return to the court this weekend, when they travel to Colorado for back to back games against Northern New Mexico and Johnson and Wales.
