CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Discussions centering on the removal or alteration of the low head dam near Kathryn, North Dakota are underway. Engineers from Moore and Barr engineering gave a presentation to a number of agencies and local stakeholders during a meeting yesterday in Valley City.
Barnes County Water Resource District Chairman Jerry Hieb says we need more public input being the dam affects so many public entities before moving forward with a decision. Hieb says it may be a 2 or 3 year process before a final decision is made.
The proposed changes focused on safety issues, like eliminating the hydraulic roller known as the drowning machine, reducing maintenance cost over debris removal, helping aquatic species on the endangered list and enhancing recreational purposes referring to anglers.
Additional public hearings concerning the dam east of Kathryn will be announced at a later date.
