(NewsDakota.com)- The first-ever North Star Athletic Association basketball games were played Wednesday night at the Jamestown Civic Center. The University of Jamestown welcomed in Mayville St. who would go on to snap the women’s 15-game win streak. The men finished off the home-stand a perfect 4-0.
The 16th-ranked Comets knocked down 10 threes, including seven in the first half to get by the No. 3 Jimmies 83-75. “We couldn’t get over that hump,” Coach Greg Ulland commented, “I felt if we could just get a lead we would be ok, but that never happened.” Jamestown lead briefly 18-16, but once Mayville grabbed the lead they didn’t relinquish it, holding off a late rally to win their 10th in a row.
The Jimmies got within five at 73-68 when Morgan Mathison hit her fourth triple of the night, but that would be as close as they got in the final minutes. Jamestown hadn’t lost since Nov. 1st when they dropped a 96-86 decision to now No. 2 Northwestern.
Hannah Steele’s 18 paced the Jimmies. Hailey Longtin had 24 for Mayville, 17 of those in the first half.
Brequan Tucker started the game like he hadn’t stopped shooting since Sunday, when he dropped 27 on Ashford, he opened the game with the first five points en route to a game-high 21. Jamestown won their fourth straight with a 63-50 decision.
This was much like a game the Jimmies were winning in 2012-13 when they were playing their best ball, a slow grind it out defensively superior effort. They held the Comets to just 50 points and didn’t have to implore the zone defense that they had so much success with against Johnson & Wales and Ashford.
Mark Hoge added 18 for the Jimmies, he knocked down four three-pointers in the first half. Taylor Newton picked up the scoring in the second half when he knocked down three from beyond the arc and finished with 13.
Jamestown will head to Aberdeen on Saturday where they will play Presentation College. The game times are 4pm and 6pm. The games will be broadcast on 1400/97.1 KQDJ and NewsDakota.com.
