N.D. – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp responded to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board railway safety recommendations issued on January 23 in the aftermath of derailments and explosions last year in Quebec, Canada and in the United States.

Heitkamp says, “addressing routing, improving training for first responders, and looking into how products are packaged and classified are issues that need to be addressed. The NTSB offered recommendations on safety standards for tank cars, and we must continue to evaluate these standards moving forward. My priorities are preventing such accidents in the first place, and making sure that if they do happen, we know how to respond. The recent report is another important step in that effort.”
