(NewsDakota.com)- Not exactly how you draw it up, but with their backs against the wall Jamestown rallied to defeat Minot 60-57 in Thursday night’s WDA contest. The Magi jumped on the Jays with a 18-0 lead before Taylor Schmiechel got Jamestown on the board with a three-pointer nearly six minutes into the game.
Jamestown pulled within eight before the half, but Minot scored the last five points and went into the half up 37-24. Cassie Askvig had 18 of her 27 in the first half. The 6’1″ sophomore knocked down five triples in the game.
The Jays outscored the Magi 36-20 in the second half to even their record at 5-5.
After the Jays took their first lead (43-42) on a Meghan Orr three-pointer, Minot rattled off the next eight points to regain the lead at 50-43. Jamestown finished the game on a 17-7 run and held Minot without a field goal the final two minutes.
Erin Mullowney had all 11 of her points in the second-half including a left-handed layup to put the Jays in front for just the second time all night with 25 seconds remaining. McKayla Orr added two free throws, two of her team-high 22, to extend the lead to three and Sierra Duttenheifer’s shot to tie it was no-good.
Jamestown is on the road at Mandan on Thursday and then will host Bismarck High on February 1st.
