Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne issued the following statement today regarding farm bill conference negotiations and country-of-origin labeling (COOL):
“North Dakota Farmers Union opposes any action by Congress to alter, repeal or weaken our nation’s country-of-origin labeling law. It provides valuable information to consumers on the origin of their unprocessed meat products and allows U.S. ranchers to differentiate their products in the marketplace.
“The revised COOL regulations that USDA implemented in November are working and are in compliance with a World Trade Organization ruling. The effort by large meatpackers and processors to halt COOL through farm bill negotiations is wrong. We urge our congressional delegation and members of Congress to support family farmers and ranchers and reject any amendments that would undermine this important and effective law.”
