CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) It was National Guard Appreciation Night at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse where the  Valley City Hi-Liners girls basketball team cleared the .500 mark in the Eastern Dakota Conference with a 54-38 win over Wahpeton. At the same time the boys were on the road battling a strong Huskies team that claimed a impressive 95-46 win over the Hi-Liners.

Wearing white jerseys with camouflage shorts the Hi-Liners girls looked a little different on the court but only in physical appearance. Their play displayed the same old stubborn defense. The Hi-Liners would finish the game with five steals in the contest, and would hold the huskies to under 40 points.

Offensively the Hi-Liners charge was led by Dierra Diegel who totaled 20 points. Danica Diegel would pull down her first double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Clarissa Olson was right behind her teammates with 10 points on the night.

The Win advances the Valley City girls to 8-2 on the year, with a 3-2 record in the conference.

The boy’s team was in Wahpeton on Tuesday night taking on the Huskies on their home court. Wahpeton jumped out to early lead utilizing shots from behind the arc. The Huskies would knock down 13 three pointers in the game and didn’t miss often when they weren’t on the perimeter.

Wahpeton’s defense was just as relentless as their offense. The Huskies were the first team this year to hold Jared Lentz to less than 20 points in a game, as the Hi-Liners Junior forward still had a strong night with 10 points in the contest.

Wahpeton’s Blaze Irwin had the game high with 19 points. Four other huskies would finish in double digits; Jack Christensen(12), Jake Grueneich (18), Brady Onchuck(11), and Derek Meyer (10).

The Hi-Liners will return to the court on Thursday when they host Grand Forks Central. The Hi-Liners and Knights met up earlier this year. In that game it was the Knights who claimed victory 85-63. You can hear the game on Dakota Country Radio starting at 7:15pm on Dakota Country Radio 1490 KOVC.
