FARGO, N.D (NewsDakota.com) Both the Hi-Liners girls and boys basketball teams were on the road Tuesday. The night would not be a good one for the Hi-Liners as both the boys and girls teams would end the night with losses. The #5 Hi-Liner girls team fell just short of #2 West Fargo on night as the Packers claimed a 62-51 win in the top five match up. It would be similer finish for the boys who fell to Devils Lake by a score of 75-59.
The loss drops the Valley City girls to 7-5 in the Eastern Dakota Conference. The Hi-Liners are now 11-4 on the season. West Fargo remains undefeated on the year with a 14-0 conference record and a 15-0 season record.
West Fargo got out to an early first half lead dominating the opening period of play and taking a 38-15 lead into half time.
The second half, however, would be a much different story. Turning to their defense, the Hi-Liners would come up with 12 steals in the game, a majority of which came in the second period. Capitalizing on the turnovers Valley City would bring the game back to within eight points with just three minutes to left. As the final minutes ticked away, the Packers would extend the led by hitting their chances at the free throw line. On the night the Packers missed just three of 17 free throws on the night. That advantage would allow the packers to capture the victory.
It was a strong night for Valley City’s Danica Diegel who battled under the boards for 13 points and 7 rebounds. Her sister, Dierra, would finish the night with a team high 16 points.
The packers were led on the score sheet by Cassicy Thorson who finished the game with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The next game for Valley City will be on Friday, February 14th when they host Devils Lake. You can hear the game on 1490 KOVC starting at 7:15pm.
While the girls were in Fargo, the Boys tame made their way to Devils Lake for a match up with the Firebirds. A slow start would also plague the boys as they fell to the Firebirds 75-59.
Devils Lake took the advantage at half time going into the break with a 16 point advantage.
Despite a season high of 33 points from Valley City Jared Lentz, the Hi-Liners would not be able to overcome the deficit.
The loss drops the Hi-Liners to 0-12 in the conference with a 2-9 mark on the season. Next up for Valley City , they travel to West Fargo Sheyenne on Monday, February 17th.
