(NewsDakota.com) The Jamestown High School boys hockey team had scored nine goals against the Braves of Bottineau/Rugby during the regular season, including seven goals on Braves goaltender Riley Monson last Saturday. That didn’t matter on Thursday.
Monson made 37 saves to assist the #4 seed to a 4-1 victory against the #5 seeded Jays in the opening round of the Western Dakota Association Hockey Tournament in Minot on Thursday.
Jamestown outshot the Braves 20-10 in the second period, and for the game 38-32, but only netted a tally in the third period. Nick Stockert scored with Jays goaltender Brian Wentzel pulled for an extra skater. Bottineau/Rugby’s Harrison Aide added an empty netter to seal the deal; picking up a hat trick in the contest, and giving him a statewide high of 53 goals. Luke Amsbaugh scored the other goal for the Braves. Aide also picked up an assist. Wentzel made 29 saves in the loss for Jamestown.
Bottineau/Rugby moves onto a semifinal matchup against the Bismarck Demons. Bismarck defeated Hazen/Beulah 11-1 in an earlier quarterfinal game. The Jays now face a win or go home scenario when they take on the North Stars at 11 a.m. Friday. Jamestown defeated Hazen/Beulah both times during the regular season.
