Shearer died March 17, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center in Oakes, ND, after a short illness.

She had been a resident of the Good Sam for four years, where she was very well cared for and happy to be a part of the Good Sam family. Ruth was born on January 15, 1917 in Denhoff, ND, the fourth of eight children born to Jacob and Ruth Hempel. Ruth attended Valley City State Teachers College, where she met Earl. After earning her teaching certifcate, Ruth started her teaching career at Alice, ND. After they married, Ruth and Earl lived in several communities in North Dakota, before settling in Minot in 1946, where Earl taught at MSTC (now Minot State University).

Ruth and Earl moved from Minot to Oakes after he retired in 1977. She is survived by her children, Dale (Caryl) Shearer Oakes, ND, Robbie (Gunnar) Wallin, Stockholm, Sweden, Jay (Stephanie) Shearer, Billings, MT, and Steve (Peggy) Shearer, Lutherville, MD; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dean Hempel, Minneapolis, MN and Robert (Mary Helen) Hempel, Meridian, ID. She was preceded in death by two sisters, three brothers, and her husband of 64 years, Earl.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes. Her funeral will be held at Oakes Church of the Nazarene on Monday, March 24, 2014 starting at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at the Oakes View Cemetery.
