N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Library Board has released several details to the public on its library plan in Jamestown.
According to the report, the new library is estimated to cost $8.25 million with $1.02 million already raised in donations. Estimated sales tax for Stutsman County is around $33.75 a year. Property owners now pay 3.5% of their property tax for the library, so this will not change. The new library is estimated to be around 28,000 square feet. State Library Standards for populations over 25,000 require a minimum of 25,000 square feet.
When asked why renovating the current building wasn’t an option, James River Valley Library architect Joel Davy stated that the space wouldn’t be there. The plans are to add a garage for the bookmobile and add parking as well. The library also understands its role in the changing world of electronic media. A study conducted by The Pew Institute states that in young adults, 18-29, 35% do not own a smartphone, 66% do not own a tablet and 72% do not own an e-reader. The library has become a place to learn and share ideas and a home for those that don’t have access to the latest electronics.
The library board will be looking to find an appropriate use for the Alfred Dickey building when the time comes.
