Marshall was born in Oakes, ND on January 6, 1942 to John & Marjorie (Claeys) Visto. His family lived on several farms near Oakes before buying a farm near Guelph in 1945. Marshall is a 1960 graduate of the Guelph High School and received a year of diesel mechanics at the State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND. He then became partners with his dad and brother Marvin on the family farm. Today, on the same farm, he is in partnership with his sons, Marty and Micheal, – a 69 year legacy.
On November 23, 1963, Marshall was united in marriage to Mona Buttke of Crete, ND at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hecla, SD. The couple became members of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Oakes in 1974. Marshall was seriously hurt in a pickup accident in January 1976 and has been confined to a wheelchair as a quadriplegic these last 38 years. Despite those injuries, Marshall was very active in his community serving on the Port Emma Township board since 1971, the Oakes school board and the Sheyenne Valley Special Education Unit at Valley City, ND from 1977 to 1987. He also remained involved in his farm by managing the bookkeeping, keeping his sons company in the shop, sharing his knowledge on how farm equipment runs, ordering parts, checking his fields on a regular basis, and countless other tasks that will be sorely missed by his sons. His other hobbies included playing computer poker, reading mystery novels, and teaching his grandkids many important lessons in life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mona; 2 sons: Marty (Deanne) and Micheal (Wendy), all of Guelph; a daughter: Melissa (Todd) Palmer, near Denver, CO; 2 sisters: Diane (Wesley) Orr, Ennis, MT; and Edith (James) Davis, El Paso, TX; a sister-in-law: Jane Visto McCabe, Fargo, ND; 9 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marge; daughter, Michele; brother, Marvin; and a nephew, Kristopher (Marvin & Jane).
