CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) Needing just one out to claim a victory in the seventh, the Hi-Liners would instead be handed their first loss of the Eastern Dakota Conference season by a score of 4-3 to Fargo Shanley.
Just three days after meeting up at the Detroit Lake Tournament in Minnesota the Deacons and the Hi-Liners were at it again. Previously, it was the Hi-liners who had earned an 11-6 win over their conference foes, but this time the night belonged to the Deacons.
The Hi-liners were the first to strike in the second frame. On a pick off attempt of Madison McDaniel, Brooke Breckheimer would steal home on the the throw to second base. The lead would not last long though, as the Deacons answered on a RBI single for Marissa Schons.
In the sixth, Valley City would take back the lead with a two RBI double that drove in Breckheimer and Heather Knutson. Again, that lead would be short lived.
In the seventh inning, the Hi-Liners got the first out when Jessica Denholm struck out Sydney Weber. After an additional out, Ingrid Swanson and Gabby Nelson would run the count full before reaching base on a walk, putting runners on first and second for Lauren Rotunda. After getting down in the count one and two, the Deacons short stop would tie the game with a swing of the bat that sent the ball soaring between the Hi-Liners right and center fielders. Just one batter later Schons would drive in the winning run on an RBI double.
The Hi-liners would open the bottom of the frame with a single from Madison McDaniel. On the next at bat, Hannah Meyer was robbed of the game tying hit when Lauren Rotunda made a diving catch on a hard hit line drive near the short stop. McDaniel would exit the base paths on a fielders choice just a play later. Then, Sydney Weber would seal the win for the Deaocons by catching a pop fly.
Denholm was solid in a losing effort pitching two inning in relief for Danica Diegel. Denholm finished the game with three strike outs and allowing just two hits. In 5-1/3 innings, Diegel allowed just three hits and walked two.
Molly Schmidt earned the win for Shanley pitching a complete game scattering seven hits and allowing no walks.
The two point game drops the Hi-Liners to 3-2 in the conference with a overall record of 11-3. The Deacons advance to 5-3 in the EDC and 7-5 overall.
The Hi-Liners next game is scheduled for May 6th against the top ranked team in the state, West Fargo.
