CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) On the back of a monstrous fifth inning the Mayville State Comets would defeat the Valle City State Vikings 20-3 in round two of the North Star/Frontier Conference Tournament on Saturday night.

The Comets got to Valley City State’s Starter, Corey Pudas, early putting up two runs on three hits in the first inning. The Vikings would tie the game in the bottom of the frame with a two RBI single from Cole Honl.

With strong pitching for Pudas and Mayville State’s Aaron Dick, the game would remain deadlocked until the top of the fifth. That is when Mayville State opened the flood gates. After scoring three quick runs, the Comets would load the bases. Then Rowdy Dove sent a blast over the center field fence for the first grand slam of the weekend. By the time the Vikings could get out of the inning, the Comets had chased three VCSU pitchers and scored 13 runs.

The Vikings would add one more run to their total in the bottom of the fifth when Honl drove in  Derek Elliott from second base. Mayville would have another big inning in the sixth, posting five more runs. The 17 run difference would stop the game short in the seventh inning.

Dick earned the win on the mound for the Comets pitching a complete seven inning game. Pudas was given the loss.

The win for Mayville means the Comets will play the University of Jamestown on Sunday morning at 11am. The Vikings will play Sunday afternoon at 2pm against Dickinson State. If VCSU wins they will play a second game at 5pm against the loser of the Jamestown and Mayville States game. You can hear both the Vikings and Jimmies games on 103.1 The Raven, KRVX.
