Thoughts:
We finished off the Wahpeton match very well. The doubles came out and dominated the rest of their matches and we rolled right into singles where we took care of business. Doubles is definitely our strong suit as we have not lost a doubles match against the #4-#9 ranked teams in the EDC.
Sara Gilbertson, our lone senior, is playing the best tennis of her career. She is playing in the moment and hitting her shots. She is the player that needs the least amount of coaching on the team as she always plays at the top of her game and goes out and just plays tennis!
Maia Wendel had a breakthrough in singles. She has always stressed about singles and was tentative going into matches. After figuring out that as long as she plays the game with the best attitude, the best heart, and playing in the moment, that she will be successful no matter if she wins or loses – her singles game turned around. In two full singles matches, she dropped a total of 2 games! Wow.
Sometimes, a loss leads to growth. Abby lost to Wahpeton and had some valuable lessons in that loss. She turned it around and less than 2 hours later, she went out on the court and won 6-2, 6-2 against North. Claire and Sam both had tough 3 set losses today. These losses don’t have to be in vain. If we learn and grow in our mental toughness because of these losses, we will be even a better team next time we are on the court. I believe these two can do just that. If every individual on our team can play in the moment, play to WIN the point, and believe we can win the next point (which to do all three all the time is tough) – we can be really ‘salty’ come tournament time.
Next action is a home double-header at home versus Grand Forks Central at 12:30 and then Shanley at 4:30pm. These are the last matches of the regular season. We then have the West Fargo Invite tournament on Saturdayand Regionals in Grand Forks next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
I love being a Hi-Liner!
