N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – We see it in movies and on TV all the time. Cargo with loads of humans being trafficked to another part of the world to be sold into either sexual slavery or forced labor. Some are even sold into forced marriage.

According to “Transnational Crime In The Developing World”, Human Trafficking represented an estimated $31.6 billion dollars of the international trade per annum in 2010. Senator Heidi Heitkamp says that a lot of human trafficking is also taking place right here in North Dakota.

Senator Heitkamp has been working with Cindy McCain of the McCain Institute to figure out different strategies for detection, intervention, prosecution, and prevention. Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Justice, and non-profit leaders are also working on addressing human trafficking.
