Duane Olstad was born September 8, 1934 in Mayville, ND to Pauli and Alma (Erickson) Olstad. He grew up on the farm near Galesburg, ND and was baptized and confirmed at Elm River Lutheran Church. Doug attended rural grade school and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1952.

Doug worked at Armour Beef, lifting beef, in West Fargo, ND from 1954-1959. In 1956, he married Madalyn (Steffes) Reilly.

He was the assistant manager at Coast to Coast in Missoula, MT for a time. From 1964-1970, he managed 4 B’s Restaurants in Missoula, Billings, and Butte, MT. Doug moved back to North Dakota and farmed in the Page and Galesburg area.

In 1988, he married Myrna (Olstad) Nelson at Hope Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND. He worked for various gravel and construction companies until 2010, most recently at Turner Sand and Gravel.

Doug died at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo on Friday, May 16, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Myrna of Valley City; four sons, Brad Douglas (Erin) Olstad and Dean Roger (Danette) Olstad both of West Fargo, ND, Randal “Jerome” (Karen) Olstad of Moscow, ID and Pauli Todd (Linda) Olstad of St. Paul, MN; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Helen (Ralph) Punton of Ayr, ND and Marcy (Jim) Bubb of East Grand Forks, MN; brother, Donald (Janice) Olstad of Galesburg, ND; and many nieces and nephews. Doug is also survived by stepdaughters, Corey (Kent) Jonson of West Fargo and Dawn Blilie of Christine, ND; 5 step grandchildren; mother-in-law, Olive A. Olstad of Valley City; and sisters-in-law, Jan (Mike) Haugen and Edie (Tom) Hockenberry and their families.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sylvia Kyllo and Connie (Duane) Bring; brother-in-law, Harvey Kyllo; a stepson, Randy Nelson; and a step grandson.

The funeral for Douglas D. Olstad, 79, Valley City, ND will be 1:00 PM, Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City on Monday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
