Mary Agnes Schlegel, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Sherman) Schlegel, was born July 3, 1926 on a farm near Fingal, ND. Mary worked as hired help on area farms during the summer months of her school years, doing everything from cooking, laundry, feeding the poultry and cleaning. Mary graduated from Fingal High School in 1945. After her graduation, she was employed by Jamestown Hospital where she worked in the laundry department. She married Herman I. “Skip” Morth on July 19, 1948 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fingal, ND. An inseparable couple, she became his order clerk during his many years as bulk agent for Standard Oil Company and assisted him with their small farming and large gardening operation to help support a family that would grow to nine children. Mary was a wonderful cook, adept at the standard American fare as well as the various ethnic dishes she grew up learning how to prepare. She was also a wonderful mentor for her six daughters. She took great satisfaction in assuring that each of them was ready to leave home with the skills of canning, sewing, baking and crocheting. Christmas was one of her great joys in life. She knew how to make it special. After the manger, “Christmas Cardinals” were her favorite decorations. Quilting became one of her great interests in her later years. She loved her grandchildren and showed that love by creating a special quilt for each of them, with Grandpa’s assistance as needed, for as long as she was able to do so. Mary was a member of the Fingal American Legion Auxiliary, the Fingal Band Mothers and the St. Anne’s Altar Society in Fingal. Though she was a homebody, she found those involvements to be both enjoyable and rewarding.
Mary is survived by her husband, Herman, Fergus Falls, MN; nine children, Paul (Nancy) Morth, Bismarck, ND, Lucy Morth, Sharon, ND, Loretta (Greg) Rockstad, East Grand Forks, MN, Marlene (Tim) Hess, Goddard, KS, Terry Morth, Rosholt, SD, LuElla Von Bank, Buffalo, ND, Myron (Darlis) Morth, Wheaton, MN, Mariliyn (Greg) Peterson, Fergus Falls, MN and Cindy (Brett) Kapaun, Tower City, ND; 21 Grandchildren; and 24 Great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters, one grandson, Nathan Rockstad and her son-in-law Don Von Bank.
