N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – North Dakota State Veterinarian Susan Keller has confirmed that anthrax has been found in a Barnes County Beef Cow recently. It’s the first reported case of the year.

She says, “Producers should consult with their veterinarians to make sure the vaccination schedule for their animals is up to date.”

Effective anthrax vaccines are available, but it takes about a week for immunity to be established, and vaccines must be administered annually. Producers should also monitor their herds for unexpected deaths and report them to veterinarians.

Anthrax has been most frequently reported in Northeast, Southeast and South Central North Dakota, but it has been found in almost every part of the state.

Barnes County has had anthrax cases before, One in 2010, 17 in 2005, one between 2001 and 2004 and four between 1989 and 1999. Stutsman County saw five anthrax cases in 2005 and one in 2000.
