CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City State Vikings had a great weekend on the playing fields and courts. The football team picked up their first win of the season in the North Star Athletic Association, the volleyball team finished with 3-1 record at the St. Mary’s Tournament in Nebraska, and the Baseball team opened the season with a double header sweep of Presentation College.
On the gridiron in Madison, South Dakota Saturday night, Kurtis Walls set a new single game passing yards record for VCSU going over the head of Dakota State’s defense for 428 passing yards. The previous record was held by Jason Beilke who had 425 yards against South Dakota School of Mines in ’07.
The Vikings defense was just as effective finishing the game with eight sacks on Justin Summers, three of them coming from lineman Sam Cooke. The 36-14 win gives the Vikings a 2-1 record on the season. They are currently 1-0 in the NSAA.
On the Volleyball court, the Vikings opened the St. Mary’s Tournament with a four game loss to Avila University. The would rally back the rest of the weekend taking a 3-0 win over AIB Business College and 3-1 wins over York College and South Western College on Saturday.
Alley Theroux and Barbara Ector led the Vikings in Kills. Ector finished with weekend posing 55 while Theroux finished the weekend at 53 in four matches. Two time NSAA Setter-of-the-Week, Stephanie Miller, had another outstanding tournament assisting on 131 kills. In the Southwestern College match the Esko, Minnesota native set a new career mark with 47 assists.
Vikings enter North Star play on Friday on the road against their archrivals the University of Jamestown.
The Vikings outstanding weekend wrapped up on Sunday with the baseball team taking wins of 6-3 and 10-7 in a double header against Presentation College. The two victories will count towards the regular season record which begins in the spring for many teams.
The Vikings earned the game one victory in the bottom of the eighth when Joe Demers broke a 3-3 tie with a two run double.
In Game two the Vikings jumped out to a healthy lead putting up 10 runs through six innings. Once again it was Demers who made the biggest difference for VCSU at the dish. He finished the night cap with two triples and three RBIs.
Chris Holden picked up the win on the mound pitching 3 and 1/3 innings allowing six hits and three runs. Breion Barron picked up the victory on the bump in game one.
The Vikings travel to Mayville State next Sunday for a match up with the Comets.
