Ross Daugherty, 73, Jamestown, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014.

Doug was born July 10, 1941 in Rapid City, SD to Roscoe and Grace (Johnson) Daugherty. He was a longtime resident of LaMoure, ND, and graduated from LaMoure High School in 1959. He attended college in Valley City, and was enlisted in the United States Air Force. In 1964, he married Dianne (Vallandingham) and they had 3 sons, Michael, Brian and Kevin. In 1982, he married Shirley (Cooper-Pfeiffer). Doug adopted Shirley’s daughter, Cindy, and together they had 2 additional children, Grace and Isaac.

Doug had a love for the outdoors, and enjoyed his time over the years working as a caretaker for both Jamestown College and for LaMoure County Memorial Park, for the City of Jamestown, and as both a City and a County Forester. He also had a passion for reading and writing, publishing articles for various newspapers and for Toy Farmer Magazine. His column, The Common Man was posted in several North Dakota newspapers in the 80s and 90s, and his children’s book, Boxy: A Tree of the Prairie was published in 2008. Doug’s love of books lead him to working in the book section at The Salvation Army in Jamestown before opening up his own used bookstore, Charity, in his garage. Doug avidly pursued his woodcarving craft for much of his life. He especially loved carving the shapes of leaves and he was always on the look-out for a good Linden branch to carve.

Doug especially loved his family and would brag about how proud he was of his children to anyone who would listen.

Doug is survived by his children, Mike (Donna Zebolsky) Daugherty, Omaha, NE, Brian (Debra) Daugherty, Mt. Pleasant, TX, Kevin (Terri Heft) Daugherty, Melissa, TX, Grace (Bonner Lovern) Daugherty, Austin, TX, and Isaac Daugherty, Denver, CO; a sister, Bonnie Miller, Laurel, MT; 3 nephews, a niece, several great-nieces and nephews, 3 cousins, 10 grandchildren, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Grace Daugherty of LaMoure, his daughter, Cindy Marie Peterson of Kindred, and his brother-in-law, Charles Miller of Laurel, MT.

A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at Rosehill Cemetery in LaMoure, ND. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center Hospice or The Salvation Army.
