a courageous battle with cancer, Roger Sherman Wehlander passed away on October 21, 2014 at his home near DeLamere, ND at the age of 79. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 21 years, Alice (Nicolai); sons, Sherman, Donald (Jill) and Curtis (Lori), his daughter, Diane Wehlander (Mike Ray), step-sons Michael (Lisa) Nicolai, and Kyle Nicolai, and step-daughter Mechelle (Cory) Olsen.

Roger was born on November 10, 1934 in rural DeLamere, to Oscar W. and Eleanor Wehlander and grew up the youngest in a loving family including four brothers.

Roger attended school in DeLamere and married Constance Kvarness at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural DeLamere on December 19, 1954. Shortly after, they relocated to Sunnyvale, CA, where Roger worked for Westinghouse and Coca-Cola. They soon returned to North Dakota beginning a life of farming and raising their family.

Roger farmed and raised livestock and worked as a Farmers Insurance agent out of his home for over 30 years. He would often get claim calls that he would promptly follow up on in the late night hours following fieldwork. Connie passed suddenly on Valentine’s Day 1990. Roger married Alice Nicolai on October 1, 1993 and lived near the family farm operation the rest of his life. Roger loved to sing. His singing voice was heard at many church services, weddings and funerals; as well as regional Easter & Christmas cantatas and with family. He set up a gravel trucking business for a few years following his retirement from farming and insurance. When diagnosed with cancer in 2012, he stayed dedicated in his work and family. He was very active in his church and community. He remained an inspiring, faith-willed friend, husband, father and grandfather throughout his final months.

Roger believed in honesty and hard work, and will be remembered for his love of the Lord and the land, the love and kindness shown for his family and friends, and his pride in his country and community.

Roger is survived by his wife, Alice and his children; grandsons Terry, Kevin (Kari), David, and Erik Wehlander, step-grandsons, Dillon and Dalton Nicolai, Masen and Carsen Olsen and Josh Weber; granddaughters Carmin, Emily, Hannah and Rosalie Wehlander and step granddaughters Kasie and Morgan Weber; three great grandsons, Grady, Brees and Kolter Wehlander; brothers Marlyn (Betty) and Oscar Wilfred (Marlene), brothers-in-law, Ron Kvarness, Roger (Joann), Darryl (Sandy) and Clint (Barb) Lonbaken; sisters-in-law Jane Wehlander and Laura Donaldson and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Connie, and his brothers Erling and Vernon.
