CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City State University scholarship recipients at two high schools were surprised with their upgraded scholarships as VCSU president Tisa Mason and the VCSU scholarship committee of Heidi Larson, faculty member in the Business Department; Kaleen Peterson, Enrollment Services; and Jeremy Wiebe of the VCSU Foundation Office gave a live presentation in Harvey and Oakes High Schools.

Above photos: Kost and Roney were each chosen to receive the Dr. Richard R. and Ardis L. McCready Scholarship, which awards them with full tuition, fees, and books for four years. Neither student knew beforehand that their application had been chosen for this highest academic scholarship awarded by VCSU.

Above photo: Oakes student Dalton Scheuring, an incoming VCSU fisheries & wildlife major, was chosen to receive the Dr. Donald C. and Marjorie Meredith scholarship. This awards him $12,000 over four years and is for a student in the area of math or science.

Above: About 195 Harvey students in grades 7-12 were on hand for an assembly to help celebrate the surprise visit.

In Oakes, 28% of the Class of 2015 is planning to attend VCSU in the fall.  All of these students earned academic scholarships from VCSU through their GPA and ACT score.

Above photo: A number of VCSU alumni are employed by the Oakes School district.  Administration encouraged their participation at this event by providing classroom coverage for teachers who wanted to attend.

VCSU president Tisa Mason said, “we look forward to welcoming our talented new students this fall,” Mason added, “on behalf of the Valley City State University community we also wish to express our gratitude to the families, teachers, and administrators who supported and encouraged these students to discover their talents and excel.”

VCSU sends a big thanks to Harvey High School superintendent Dan Stutlien, and Oakes High School counselor Kelsey Beckstrom for organizing the presentations, making them so special, and keeping the secret so these could be true surprises.
