N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Road Weight Enforcement Board, a multicounty truck regulatory enforcement agency formed by Stutsman, Barnes, Dickey and LaMoure counties in 2011, will likely disband by the end of the year.

Sheriff Chad Kaiser shared a letter with Stutsman County Commissioners in which the sheriff expressed concerns to the Road Weight Enforcement Board over the performance of Deputy Tim Gillespie, who serves as the truck regulation enforcement officer.

On May 20, Gillespie was involved in a felony traffic stop on U.S. 281, south of Jamestown. Kaiser says after reviewing the deputy’s report on a conflicting incident, he decided to terminate Gillespie’s authority to act as a deputy for Stutsman County.

Meanwhile, Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin removed Gillespie’s peace officer license and issued a reprimand to the deputy. After a Grievance hearing in Barnes County, the committee will recommend that Gillespie’s peace officer license be reinstated and that his reprimand be stricken from the record being procedures were not correctly followed.

Stutsman County Commissioner Dave Schwartz said the regulatory board was considering disbanding even before the incident with Gillespie.

Representatives of LaMoure and Dickey counties had indicated their intentions to withdraw from the regulatory board. Schwartz said the four counties involved are large and it’s difficult to have one officer cover all four counties when each is experiencing more commercial truck traffic.
