“Dick” Amann, age 91, of Eckelson, ND died Monday, July 13th at his Eckelson residence.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2PM Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sanborn, ND with Rev. Arogyo Gaddigotti celebrant and Deacon James McAllister assisting.  Visitation will be from 5 PM until 7 PM Friday at the church with a Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM.  Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Richard was born at home on the farm east of Dazey in a small German settlement centered around the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was the third child in a family of nine.  For 8 years of his education he attended Sibley Trail, a rural school about 1 mile from his home. Growing up with 8 siblings, Dick had an active life at an early age: hunting and skiing on the hills around the farm; swimming, fishing, and skating on the nearby Baldhill Creek with his brothers. There were always plenty of chores around the family farm so he also learned the rigors of hard work.

At a young age he worked for local farmers. He went into the trucking business for a time and made a move to Eckelson, ND, where he managed a Standard Oil bulk station.
He also learned the trade of carpentry from his father, a German woodmaker, and worked for most of his life as a carpenter. It was in Eckelson where he met his future wife Luella Altringer, a widow with 5 children. They were married on June 28, 1955.  It was a marriage made in heaven. They became an inseparable couple.  Dick and Luella were active church members at Sacred Heart in Sanborn and he served as a Sacristan until November of 2014.

Dick was always a diligent worker. He loved the outdoors, including boating, fishing and gardening.  He was happiest working outside on his mower and always very proud to make Eckelson look beautiful. Work was literally a hobby for him and he often enjoyed helping neighbors in need, but his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. Dick and Luella enjoyed traveling to see their children.

Richard was involved with the Elks, the Eagles, the Knights of Columbus, the Sodbusters, the DFL, Sacred Heart Church choir and the St. Mary’s choir.

Richard was preceded in death by Luella, his parents Gephard and Thressa (Berger); stepsons, Gary and Louis Michael; daughter, Rosemary; three brothers, Walter, Hugo(Rosie), and Joe; and sisters Irene Kathryn (7 months), and Irene Francis (Riedman); and a brother in law, Bob Riedman.

He is survived by his children, Paul (Gayle) Amann and Mary (Rick) Williams; step sons, Doug (Patty) and William (Jeanine) Altringer; step daughters Joni Altringer and Janet (Tom) Lowe; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; his brother Henry (Delores) Amann; two sisters, Gertrude (Charles) Solum and Mary (Bill) Pritchard; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Richard will be remembered as being very spiritual, humble, kind, hard working, and honored to serve his family, friends and neighbors.
