CITY (NewsDakota.com) The top four seeds were victorious on the first day of the 2015 Barnes County Girls Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.
#1 LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 67 #8 Griggs County Central 23
The second best team in Class B Girls Basketball in the state of North Dakota made quick work of the Cougars in the first of Tuesday’s four games. The Loboes took a commanding 17-4 lead after one, and outscored the Cougars 22-6 in the second eight minutes.
LLM had a team high 16 points from Jackie Meiklejohn, with 12 of those points coming from four converted three-point attempts. Alicia Larsgaard netted 16 points, which included all 10 points that GCC managed to score in the first half.
#4 Oakes 45 #5 Sargent Central 30
In a rematch from a game in Forman on Saturday that saw the Cadets win, the Tornadoes were able to come up with the victory. Oakes shot 55 percent from the floor, compared with 24.5 percent for the Cadets.
Bella Hansen lead the Tornadoes with 18 points, while Jordyn Seyer had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Alexius Hajek and Amber Peterson each had 10 points in the loss for Sargent Central.
#2 Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page 54 #7 Enderlin 49
The third contest was the closest of the four played, with neither team in real control until the final four minutes of regulation when the Spartans started to pull away.
The Eagles made it interesting thanks to Allison Bartholomay’s 26 points and 14 rebounds, but the Spartans Zoe Breckheimer’s 26 points to go along with the team making 13 of 18 from the line in the second half proved to be the difference.
#3 Maple Valley 63 #6 Barnes County North 42
Unlike the day’s second game, in which the other team was victorious after losing the previous meeting, the Falcons improved to 2-0 against the Bison this season with a commanding performance, once again lead by North Dakota State University commit Rylee Nudell.
Nudell registered a tournament-high 37 points, and also picked up 12 rebounds, and finished 11 of 14 from the free-throw line. BCN had 17 points from Hannah Wilson.
Day two of the tournament is Thursday, December 10. Game one is set for 3 p.m. and will feature Griggs County Central and Sargent Central. Game two is scheduled for 4:30, and will see Enderlin meet Barnes County North.
Thursday’s evening session commences with Oakes and LaMoure-Litchville/Marion at 6 p.m., and the day concludes with Maple Valley and Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page at 7:30.
Coverage of all four games can be heard on Q101.1 FM and NewsDakota.com starting at 2:30 p.m. The Oakes/LLM contest will be simulcast on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM.
