N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—The Medina-Pingree-Buchanon Thunder girls basketball team captured the 2015 Stutsman County tournament championship with a 49-27 victory over the Ellendale Cardinals. Madi Moldenhauer led the way offensively for the Thunder with a game high 19 points. The Thunder used a smothering defense to create 26 Ellendale turnovers and held the Cardinals to just 8-32 shooting for a very cool 25 percent. Eight different girls scored for M-P-B, Megan Moser was the second leading scorer with 7 points. Jordan Thomas led the Thunder with 10 rebounds, assisting the 29-22 advantage in that category. M-P-B also collected 16 steals as a team, led by Thomas & Lauren Moser with 3 each. Thomas would also dish out 3 assists leading the way for the Thunder. Ellendale Senior Isabell Wedell led the Cardinals with 11 points and 8 rebounds. M-P-B now stands at 4-2 overall on the season and Ellendale dropped to 2-3 overall.

Third Place: Carrington 50  Edgely-Kulm-Montpelier (E-K-M) 41

The defending champion Carrington Cardinals outscored E-K-M 37-28 over the final 3 quarters of the game to take home third place. The Cardinals had another balanced scoring attack putting 3 girls into double figures with Kauri Hochhalter leading the way with 14 points, Maara Nelson and Haley Hewitt added 11 each. Hochhalter finished with a double-double as she also had a game high 10 rebounds. Nelson added 5 steals & Hewitt had 3 steals for the Cards. E-K-M Senior center Olivia Anderson had a game high 17 points and led the Rebels with 9 rebounds. Katie Entzi added 9 points and teammate Allison Giesler chipped in 8 points and 6 rebounds. Carrington sits at 4-1 overall on the season and E-K-M is now 2-2.

 Midkota/Kensal 62 Warwick 49 (7th place)

After the Lady Warriors had a 13-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Mustangs score 19 points in the second quarter, including four 3-pointers, to take a 23-22 lead at halftime.  MK outscored Warwick 39-28 to get their first victory of the year, they are 1-3, Warwick is now 2-4.  MK was led by Joslyn Hoyt with 18, followed by Taylor Sabinash with with 13 points and 15 boards.  Jade Boote added 12.  Warwick was led by Freshman Madison Leaf with 20.

South Border 50 Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter 39 (fifth place)

For the second year in a row, the Lady Mustangs win the Consolation Championship in the Stutsman Tourney.  SB was led by Brooke Buchholz with 12 and Elisabeth Dalke with 12 points and nine boards.  Kaiylin Weigel and Katelyn Long had 14 each for NGS.  South Border is now 3-2, the Imperials fall to 2-3.
