N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger has approved for circulation a petition to put legalizing marijuana use up to a statewide vote.

Jaeger on Wednesday said the measure’s backers must gather about 13,500 qualified signatures by July 11th to put it to a statewide vote in the November general election.

The petition seeks to make it legal to grow, possess, use and distribute marijuana for people 21 and older.

The petition is separate from an effort to legalize medical marijuana in North Dakota. With voters’ approval, that initiative would make it legal for North Dakotans to possess up to 3 ounces of marijuana for medical purposes. It says those who qualify could obtain the drug from a state-licensed dispensary or grow a limited supply for personal use.
