LAKE, ND (AP) – A 54-year-old Grand Forks man charged in a fatal boat crash on Devils Lake has been sentenced to two years in prison.
KZZY radio reports that District Judge Donovan Foughty sentenced Tom Burns on Friday, April 1st. The August 9th crash on Devils Lake killed a Minnesota woman and injured several others.
Burns did not make any statements at the hearing. His attorney, Ward Johnson, told the judge that Burns accepts responsibility and wanted to express his deepest apologies.
Authorities say the crash happened in the early morning hours when a boat struck a tree about 30 yards from shore while traveling about 30 mph in the area of Haybale Heights Campground. It killed 26-year-old April Stenger of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
