N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Department of Health has received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that a woman who traveled to Puerto Rico while pregnant has tested positive for Zika Virus.

According to state Epidemiologist Larua Cronquist, pregnant women should not travel to countries with Zika transmission.

“If they must travel, be extremely careful to avoid mosquito bites. The CDC recently announced that Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of microcephaly and other severe brain defects in infants.” Cronquist stated.

Zika is primarily spread through the bit of an Aedes species mosquito, but can also be transmitted sexually.
