GRAND dyten|var|u0026u|referrer|birab||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{})) FORKS, ND – (NewsDakota.com) It was a crazy tournament overall according Hi Liner Coach Matt Nielson.
Century came in with the top two doubles teams and top two singles players from the West and an unblemished team record. Red River came in with a 15 year state championship streak. Sheyenne came in as EDC tournament champions.
Century ended up with six all-staters and two individual runner ups. Red River ended up with three all-staters and both individual champions. Sheyenne ended up with one all-stater that took third in singles.
But, Red River beat Century in the semifinals. Sheyenne won the title over Red River in the finals.
Nielson said, it was excellent parody and excellent for North Dakota tennis.
Here are the Valley City Hi Liner Tennis Team 2nd Day Results:

Nielson said this wasn’t the ending we worked for but it is what it is. Maia and Reagan are All-State in Girls Tennis and the 2016 EDC doubles champions. No one can ever take that away from them. I am proud of the time and effort that they put into the season, but also the hundreds of hours in the off season. You do not make it to state or earn all-state without dedication, sacrifice, and putting in the time. Congratulations ladies.
This tournament was the last high school tennis for Maia, Abby Ingstad, and Rachel Schueneman. These three were on the varsity squad four years ago when we first made it to state. They were a big part of the turn around in our program. They bought in and now they leave a legacy for the underclassmen to follow. This will mark the end of an era as only one player (Reagan) remains from our state squad four years ago. Our team dynamics will be different without these three, but we will forge ahead and find out what works with our 2017 team. Thanks for the memories ladies.
Earlier in the tournament Coach Nielson says Valley City went to state as the #4 team from the East. He said we lost to the #1 from the West, Century. Then, we beat the #3 from the West, Mandan. In the 5th place match, we lost to the #3 from the East, Shanley. VC always listed first in the results.

Century is so deep and so tough and took us out in the first round. The surprise of the match is that Reagan played probably the best set of her career in the first set and beat Alyssa Wolf 7-5. Alyssa was the WDA champion and also is in the singles semifinals in the individual tournament.
We played Mandan in the 2nd round, a team that we lost to earlier in the year. Reagan and Maia won handily in the singles. Maia played the best singles in the Century match and the smartest in this match. In doubles, Breanna and Angela were in a back and forth match, but pulled it out 7-5 in the 2nd set to win the match. Breanna and Angela are becoming very solid tennis players. They are developing the doubles game and they also have power, spin, and the mental game.
Against Shanley in the consolation championship, we put out a line-up that could win at all 5 spots and could also lose at all 5 spots. Shanley was the better team that day and they earned the 5th place trophy. Cali was put in a tough spot all day at #3 singles – but she played her heart out and got a great state experience as an 8th grader. She will be a big part of our team for years to come. Abby and Rachel played their last high school match against Shanley. We all were pretty emotional once the match finished!
#1E Wendel/R.Ingstad(VC) plays #2W Gabriella Holmen/Britta Knudson(Century) at 11:30am at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks on Saturday.
Thoughts:
Maia and Reagan played some good tennis in the first two rounds of the individual tournament. They moved well, served well, and played as a team. As they made the semifinals, they are guaranteed All-State. Tomorrow, we will have to play patiently and not get frustrated to move onto the finals.
