(NEWSDAKOTA.COM)-Valley City State’s Nicholas McBeain and Landon Arredondo were both named Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association Football Players of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

McBeain was named the NSAA Defensive Player of the Week, while Arredondo was chosen as Special Teams Player of the Week. Jacob Giles of Dakota State (S.D.) was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week.

NSAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Nicholas McBeain – Valley City State (N.D.) – 6’1″ – 240 lbs., Junior – linebacker – Shakopee, Minn. – McBeain had a career-high 28 tackles from the middle linebacker position as Valley City State (N.D.) won its season opener, 15-10 over rival University of Jamestown (N.D.).  The 28 tackles was the highest tackle in the NAIA last week and broke the new North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference record for most tackles in a single game (previously held by Ben Kullos of Dakota State, S.D. with 25 tackles versus Waldorf, Iowa on Sept. 12, 2015).  McBeain also broke up one pass and had 1.5 tackles-for-loss in the game.    

NSAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Landon Arredondo – Valley City State (N.D.) – 5’10” – 200 lbs., Freshman – kicker – Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. – Arredondo, a freshman, went 2-for-3 on field goals and 1-for-1 on PAT extra-point kick in his first career collegiate game at Valley City State (N.D.), earning a 15-10 victory over rival Jamestown (N.D.).  He made field goals from 22- and 34-yards in the first-half, giving VCSU an 8-3 lead at halftime.  Arredondo also recorded four kick-offs for a total of 222 yards (55.5 yards per kick-off).

NSAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jacob Giles – Dakota State (S.D.) – 6’2″ – 210 lbs., Junior – quarterback – Madison, S.D. – Giles led Dakota State (S.D.) to a 34-30 upset victory on the road at rival No. 16-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).  He completed 26 passes in 48 attempts for a career-high 361 yards and threw four touchdown passes.  Giles threw a game-winning touchdown pass in the final quarter, a 4-yard pass to Preston Nordling with 2:13 remaining in the game.  It was the second straight meeting that he had thrown over 300 passing yards against Dakota Wesleyan.
